Wie sieht dein Tag als Sales Consultant in unserem englischsprachigen Sales Team aus?

Espen: Wir beraten englischsprachige Menschen über private Krankenversicherungen und die ottonova-Tarife. Das heißt: Wir telefonieren mit Interessenten, um sie über die private Krankenversicherung im Allgemeinen und ottonova im Speziellen zu informieren. Wir helfen und beraten durch den Dschungel der privaten Krankenversicherungen und wollen dabei den besten Tarif für unsere Interessenten finden.

Viele unserer Interessenten kommen aus Ländern, in denen ein einfacheres Krankenversicherungssystem als in Deutschland existiert. Ich kann das sehr gut verstehen, da ich selbst aus Norwegen komme. Dort gibt es nur ein öffentliches System, das durch Steuern finanziert wird, ähnlich wie in Großbritannien.

Die Leute, mit denen ich spreche, sind es oft nicht gewohnt, dass sie sich für eine Krankenversicherung entscheiden können. Wenn sich ein Interessent für eine private Krankenversicherung qualifiziert, helfen wir, den besten ottonova-Tarif zu finden.

Denkst du, dass ihr im englischsprachigen Team mehr erklären müsst, wie das Krankenversicherungssystem in Deutschland funktioniert?

Espen: Jeder kommt mit einem anderen Wissenstand zu uns, sodass es wirklich immer eine individuelle Beratung ist. Im Allgemeinen kennen sich Interessenten, die vielleicht schon ihr ganzes Leben in Deutschland sind, besser mit dem Sozialversicherungssystem aus.

Aber es kommt darauf an. Viele Leute, mit denen wir sprechen, haben nicht wirklich viele Informationen, während andere zum Beispiel schon unsere eBooks gelesen haben, die ein guter Leitfaden mit vielen wertvollen Informationen sind.

Wie lange bist du denn schon bei ottonova?

Espen: Ich bin jetzt seit etwas mehr als zweieinhalb Jahren bei ottonova.

Und was gefällt dir am besten an der Arbeit bei ottonova?

Espen: Ich mag, dass wir bei ottonova ein tolles Team sind und der Teamgeist in allen Abteilungen groß ist. ottonova hat viele internationale Mitarbeitende und der Austausch und die Erfahrungen meiner Kollegen sind auch für mich in der Beratung von Interessenten interessant.

Und das bekomme ich jeden Tag bestätigt, wenn ich mit Interessenten am Telefon spreche. Die meisten Interessenten sind dankbar für eine professionelle Beratung auf Englisch.

Viele Leute, mit denen wir sprechen, hatten bereits Schwierigkeiten und schlechte Erfahrungen mit anderen Versicherungsgesellschaften und sind wirklich froh, dass wir Support anbieten.

Ich kann die Probleme der Menschen, die in ein neues Land ziehen, sehr gut nachempfinden. Als ich aus Norwegen hierhergezogen bin, hätte ich mir gewünscht, ich hätte diese Art von Unterstützung gehabt, die wir bei ottonova anbieten.

Ich glaube, dass das, was wir tun, ist eine wirklich gute Sache ist.

Warum hast du dich für Deutschland entschieden?

Espen: Ich bin vor fast 13 Jahren nach Deutschland gezogen, weil ich dachte, es würde Spaß machen, ein halbes oder ganzes Jahr im Ausland zu leben. Und ich habe mich für Deutschland entschieden, weil ich als Kind schon oft mit meiner Familie in Deutschland im Urlaub war und es mir immer gefallen hat.

Außerdem liebe ich Skifahren, und da München so nah an den Alpen liegt, habe ich mich dann für München entschieden. Ich liebe München!

Da ich aus Norwegen komme, wo alles weit weg ist, gefällt mir an Deutschland und München, dass es so zentral in Europa liegt und auch ein guter Ausgangspunkt ist, um viele Länder in Europa zu bereisen und neue Orte zu entdecken.

Aber der Hauptgrund warum ich hier geblieben bin und auch bleiben werde ist natürlich die Liebe. 😊

Das ist ein sehr guter Grund zu bleiben. Was sind denn die Hauptunterschiede zwischen Deutschland und Norwegen?

Espen: Als ich Norwegen verlassen habe, war dort bereits alles digitalisiert und als ich dann nach Deutschland gezogen bin habe ich mich wirklich etwas in die Vergangenheit zurückversetzt gefühlt. Jetzt habe ich aber das Gefühl, Deutschland holt auf und wird immer digitaler.

In Norwegen kann man alles online erledigen, auch diese ganzen bürokratischen Dinge, zum Beispiel im Bürgerbüro, wenn man umzieht. Diese Dinge können für Leute, die nach Deutschland kommen, schwierig sein. Es fühlt sich wirklich altmodisch an, wenn man persönlich hingehen muss.

Und als ich hierher gezogen bin, war ich nicht auf diese kulturellen Unterschiede vorbereitet, was die Digitalisierung angeht. Aber natürlich ist Norwegen ein Land mit nur 5,5 Millionen Einwohnern und daher leichter zu digitalisieren als Deutschland mit über 80 Millionen Menschen.

Umso cooler ist es, dass wir von ottonova mit unserer App den gesamten Versicherungsprozess digitalisiert haben.

Apropos App: Was ist deine Lieblings-App?

Espen: Ich könnte definitiv nicht ohne die MVG App leben, um mich in München mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zurechtzufinden. Auch die Bring! App, ist auf meiner Favoritenliste ganz weit oben, damit ich die Dinge, die ich im Supermarkt brauche, nicht vergesse.

Und natürlich WhatsApp, denn das ist die einzige Möglichkeit, mit der man in Deutschland kommuniziert. In Norwegen benutzt es niemand.

Wie kommunizieren die Leute denn in Norwegen?

Espen: Sie rufen sich sehr oft einfach an oder benutzen SMS. (lacht) Denn dort zahlt niemand für SMS.

Du sagtest, dass du gerne Ski fährst. Was machst du denn sonst noch, wenn du nicht gerade arbeitest?

Espen: Ich spiele Handball. Das war schon immer neben dem Skifahren mein Hobby. Ich habe mit 6 Jahren angefangen, und ich spiele immer noch zum Spaß in einer Mannschaft hier in München.

Wir spielen zwar nicht in einer hohen Liga, aber wir nehmen jedes Jahr an einem internationalen Turnier teil. Wir waren schon an vielen Orten in Europa, und nächste Woche fahren wir sogar nach Oslo. Ich freue mich sehr auf das Turnier und darauf, nach Hause zu kommen. Meine Familie wird dort sein und mich spielen sehen.

Du bist also so etwas wie ein internationaler Handballstar.

Espen: Ja, so in etwa. (lacht.) Nein, wir spielen nicht auf hohem Niveau, aber viele Leute wie ich haben früher in höheren Ligen gespielt haben, als wir jünger waren, und jetzt spielen wir nur noch zum Spaß. Es geht mehr um den sozialen Aspekt als ums Gewinnen.

In meinem Team gibt es auch viele Events. Wenn man in ein neues Land kommt und einem Sportverein beitritt, kann man dort sehr schnell neue Kontakte knüpfen.

Ich wollte dich gerade nach deinem speziellen Life-Hack fragen, aber ich denke, das ist schon ein sehr guter Tipp.

Espen: Ja, ich meine, es gibt auch Expat-Gruppen, in denen man Leute kennen lernen kann, aber ich denke, der einfachste Weg, Leute kennen zu lernen, wenn man neu in einer Stadt ist, ist, einen Sportverein oder einen Verein für irgendein anderes Hobby zu finden. Das würde ich Leuten, die ins Ausland ziehen, immer empfehlen, denn die meisten Leute lernt man entweder durch ein bestimmtes Hobby oder durch die Arbeit kennen.

In meinem Sportverein und bei unseren ottonova Events habe ich viele neue Freunde gefunden.

Was war denn dein schönstes Event bei ottonova?

Espen: Die ottonova-Geburtstagsfeier im letzten Jahr war für mich etwas ganz Besonderes, weil es das erste Event nach dem Lockdown war und wir uns so lange nicht im Büro gesehen haben. Dieser Moment ist mir besonders in Erinnerung geblieben, weil wir nun endlich auch mal persönlich zusammengekommen sind.

What does your day look like as a Sales Consultant in our English-speaking Team?

Espen: We advise English-speaking people about private health insurance and the ottonova tariffs. This means that we phone prospective customers to inform them about private health insurance and ottonova in particular, and to help them find the right health insurance. We help and advise through the jungle of private health insurance and aim to find the best tariff for our customer.

We navigate English-speaking prospects through the complicated German health insurance system.

Many of our interested people come from countries that have a simpler health insurance system than Germany. I can understand this very well as I come from Norway. There is only one public system there, financed by taxes, similar to the UK.

The people I talk to are often not used to being able to choose health insurance. If my prospect qualifies for private health insurance, we help them find the best ottonova tariff.

Do you think you in the English-speaking team have to explain more how the health insurance system in Germany works?

Espen: Everyone comes to us with a different level of knowledge, so it really is always an individual consultation. In general, students who have maybe been in Germany their whole life are more familiar with the social security system.

But it depends. A lot of people we talk to don't really have a lot of information, while others have already read our eBooks, for example, which are a good guide with a lot of valuable information.

How long have you been with ottonova?

Espen: I am with ottonova a little bit more than 2 and a half years now.

And what do you like best about working at ottonova?

Espen: I like that we're a great team at ottonova and that there's a lot of team spirit in all departments. ottonova has a lot of international employees, and the exchange and experiences of my colleagues are also interesting for me when advising future customers.

I really believe in our product, our tariffs, and services. 

And I am getting this confirmed every day when I speak with people on the phone. That’s a really rewarding part of the job!

A lot of people we talk to already had struggles and bad experiences with other insurance companies or public offices and they are really glad that we offer English support.

I can really relate to the people moving to a new country and the struggles that they have. When I moved here from Norway, I wished I had that kind of support we are offering at ottonova.

I believe what we are doing is a really good thing.

Why did you choose Germany?

Espen: I moved to Germany almost 13 years ago because I thought it would be fun to live abroad for half a year or a year. And I chose Germany because I have been to Germany many times for vacation with my family as a child and always liked it.

I also love skiing, and since Munich is so close to the Alps, I chose Munich. I love Munich!

Coming from Norway where everything is far away, what I like about Germany and Munich is that it is so central in Europe and also a good starting point to travel to many countries in Europe and discover new places.

But the main reason why I stayed and will stay here is of course love. 😊

That’s a great reason to stay! So, what are the main differences between Germany and Norway?

Espen: When I left Norway, everything there was already digitalized, and when I moved to Germany, I really felt a bit like I was transported back in time. But now I have the feeling that Germany is catching up and becoming more and more digital.

Back then, you could hardly pay by card anywhere in Germany. That was a shock for me!

In Norway, you can do everything online, including all these bureaucratic things, for example at the citizens' office when you move. These things can be difficult for people coming to Germany. It feels really old-fashioned when you have to go in person.

And when I moved here, I wasn't prepared for these cultural differences, in terms of digitalization. But of course,, Norway is a not very populated country with only 5.5 million people, so it's easier to digitize than Germany with over 80 million people.

So it's even cooler that we at ottonova have digitized the entire insurance process with our app.

Speaking of our App, what’s your favorite App?

Espen: I definitely couldn't live without the MVG app to find my way around Munich using public transportation. Also, the bring! App, is high on my list of favorites, so I don't forget the things I need at the supermarket.

And there’s of course WhatsApp because that’s the only way people communicate in Germany. In Norway no one’s using it.

How are they communicating in Norway?

Espen: They very often just call each other or are using SMS. Because no one is paying for SMS there.

You said you like skiing. What else do you do when you’re not working?

Espen: I play handball. That has always been together with skiing my favorite thing to do. I started when I was 6 years old, and I still play for fun in a team here in Munich.

We are not playing in a high league, but we are playing an international tournament every year. We have been to many places in Europe already and next week we are going to Oslo actually. I’m really looking forward to the tournament and going home. My family will be there and watch me play.

Nice, you’re kind of an international handball star.

Espen: Yeah, kind of (laughs). No, we are not playing high level, but a lot of people like me used to play high level when we were younger and now we are just playing to have fun. It is more about the social aspect than winning. My team has a lot of social events.

Coming to a new country joining a sports team helps you make new contacts really quickly. For me, a sports club is the best place to make new friends in a foreign country.

I was just going to ask you about your special life-hack, but I guess that is already a very good tip.

Espen: Yes, I mean there are also Expat groups where you can meet people, but I guess the easiest way to meet people when you’re new in a city is to find a sports club or a club for any other kind of hobby. I would always recommend that to people moving abroad because you meet most people either through a specific hobby or work.

What was your favorite ottonova event?

Espen: Last year's ottonova birthday party was very special for me because it was the first event after the lockdown, and we hadn't seen each other in the office for so long. This moment has remained particularly memorable for me because we finally got together in person.
