It's Meet us Monday! Heute mit Q&A Engineer Álvaro. Er erzählt, was sich hinter der Abkürzung verbirgt und wie wir sicherstellen, dass alles in unserer App funktioniert. Außerdem haben wir übers Surfen, Vorurteile über Deutschland und wie man den richtigen Weg findet gesprochen. (English Version of the interview below)

Álvaro, du bist ja aus Spanien. Wieso hast du dich für Deutschland entschieden und wieso für ottonova?

Ich wollte schon lange nach Deutschland kommen. Also habe ich mich über ein Stipendium der Universität Madrid an der TU München beworben. Am 1. Oktober 2019 bin ich dann hier in München angekommen. Ich wollte allerdings auch praktische Erfahrungen in einem Unternehmen sammeln. Also habe ich nach Start-ups gesucht: ich habe einfach bei Google „Beste Start-ups 2019“ eingegeben und da kam ottonova.

Aus meinem Bewerbungsgespräch habe ich sehr positive Vibes mitgenommen. Als ich also dann den Vertrag als Werkstudent im Bereich angeboten bekam, habe ich mich sehr darauf gefreut, bei ottonova anzufangen. Und was ich im Büro erlebt habe, als ich alle Kolleg:innen getroffen habe, war wirklich cool. Wirklich schade, dass ich wegen Corona nicht alle im Büro kennenlernen konnte, aber nach über einem Jahr habe ich immer noch ein super positives Gefühl ottonova gegenüber.

Ich habe mich ehrlich gesagt nie für Krankenversicherung interessiert. Als ITler interessiert man sich normalerweise eher für Google oder Amazon. Aber das Spannende an ottonova ist, dass IT so eine große Rolle spielt im Unternehmen. Das ist meiner Meinung nach sehr positiv, weil jeder davon profitiert.

Und dann bist du nach deinem Studium direkt Vollzeit bei ottonova eingestiegen?

Ja genau. Mir wurde von Anfang an gesagt, dass sich mich gerne Vollzeit im Team dabei hätten. Also habe ich im Oktober mein Studium beendet und Vollzeit bei ottonova angefangen.

Wie genau können wir uns denn deinen Alltag vorstellen? Du hast schon erzählt, dass du in der IT bist, aber was genau machst du da?

Ich muss meine Arbeit auf zwei Schritte runterbrechen. Der erste: ottonova hat verschiedene Apps wie z.B. die Admin App. Und ich muss sicherstellen, dass die neuen Features auch wirklich released werden. Der letzte Schritt, der bei den Entwicklern liegt, ist zu überprüfen, ob auch alles so funktioniert wie es soll – und das ist meine Aufgabe.

Aber dann mache ich auch noch „Automation Tests“, womit im Prinzip gemeint ist, dass ich überprüfe, dass auch alles Bestehende weiterhin so funktioniert wie es soll. Wenn man beispielsweise eine neue Funktion entwickelt, kann es passieren, dass etwas bei den alten Strukturen nicht mehr funktioniert. Das zeigt sich dann in diesem Automatic Test, der im Hintergrund läuft.

Jetzt wissen wir endlich was ein Q&A Automation Engineer macht. Wir würden die gerne noch eine Frage zu dir selbst stellen: Welche (digitale) Innovation würde dein Leben einfacher machen?

Gute Frage! Ich plane alle meine Aufgaben gerne sehr genau und hätte gerne mehr Künstliche Intelligenz in meinen Alltag integriert, beispielsweise eine intensivere Nutzung von Alexa und ähnlichen Tools. Und das vielleicht etwas weiterentwickeln, sodass es noch intelligenter wird. Auch für Q&A wäre das in der Zukunft wirklich cool.

Erst letzte Woche habe ich mir gedacht, dass es auch für das ottonova Büro hier gute Ansätze gäbe. In der App von meinem Fitnessstudio kann man sehen, wie viele Personen aktuell dort sind. Das wäre auch super für unser ottonova Büro. Oder vielleicht, um zu sehen, wie viele Leute sich gerade gleichzeitig auf der Toilette aufhalten.

Wenn wir schon von Apps sprechen: Was ist deine liebste App?

Es gibt eine App, die ich wirklich gerne mag: Trello.

Mit Trello kann man doch Kanban Boards erstellen, oder?

Ja genau. Und ansonsten wird immer Google Maps meine Lieblingsapp sein. Ich finde, dass Google Maps wirklich die nützlichste App auf der Welt ist. Man bekommt Echtzeitinformationen über Staus, die Postleitzahlen von Straßen und auch die Satellitenansicht ist wirklich super. Google Maps bringt dich überall hin – ich liebe es.

ottonova: Noch vor fünfzehn Jahren ist man mit einer großen Landkarte rumgefahren und jetzt tippst du dein Ziel einfach in das Handy ein und schon weißt du genau, wo du hinmusst. Man kann sich das gar nicht mehr vorstellen, oder?

Álvaro: Ja. Mit Google Maps ist man nie verloren. Solange man Internet und Akku auf seinem Handy hat, kann man sich nie verirren, weil Google Maps weiß, wo du bist. Ich kann mir nicht mehr vorstellen, in der Zeit zurück zu gehen.

ottonova: Das ist schon ein bisschen gruselig, aber natürlich auch cool.

Álvaro: Das wollte ich gerade sagen: Google Maps weiß so viel. Wo arbeitest du? Wo wohnst du? Besuchst du jemanden? Wenn ja, wie oft? Aber man kann diese Informationen auch einsehen und für sich nutzen.

Warum genau hast du dich für Deutschland entschieden? Bestimmt nicht wegen dem Wetter.

Nein, ganz sicher nicht wegen dem Wetter. Wenn ich ehrlich bin, hat das Gehalt eine große Rolle gespielt. Ich war neugierig, wie ein Land, das zwei Weltkriege verloren hat, dazu in der Lage war, wieder zu den besten in Europa zu gehören.

Es gibt so viele Vorurteile über Deutsche und die meisten stimmen nicht. Und das ist etwas, das man nur mit seinen eigenen Augen sehen kann, wenn man dort lebt. Die guten und die schlechten Dinge. Italien, Frankreich, Portugal sind Länder, die sehr ähnlich zu meinem Heimatland Spanien sind. Aber Deutschland nicht, es ist anders. In vielen Aspekten. Das finde ich spannend.

Was machst du, wenn du nicht arbeitest?

Álvaro: Ich bin gerne aktiv, ich gehe zum Beispiel gerne am Eisbach surfen. Normalerweise stehe ich um 6 Uhr morgens auf, gehe surfen, fahre heim, um zu duschen, und fange dann an zu arbeiten. Ich lese auch sehr gerne, Sachen über Informatik, aber auch Science Fiction.

Und ich liebe Musik! Nicht nur hören, sondern ich spiele auch selbst. In Granada hatte ich mit einigen Kommilitonen eine Indie Rock Band. Dort habe ich Bass gespielt.

ottonova: Wir sollten eine ottonova Band gründen.

Álvaro: Ja, lass uns die ottoband gründen.

Und zum Abschluss: Was war dein schönster ottonova Moment?

ottonova war für mich der erste Vollzeit-Job, ich werde also nie vergessen, wie ich meinen Vertrag unterschrieben habe. Aber es gibt auch viele andere tolle ottonova Momente, als ich zum Beispiel meinen Geburtstag im Büro gefeiert habe.

Generell finde ich, dass ottonova ein Ort ist, an dem es egal ist, ob du aus Marketing, HR, IT bist – du kannst immer an jeder Diskussion teilnehmen und deine Meinung wird respektiert werden. Das mag ich.

Álvaro, you are from Spain. Why did you choose Germany and why ottonova?

I had wanted to come to Germany for a long time. So I applied to TU Munich via a scholarship from the University of Madrid. I then arrived here in Munich on October 1, 2019. However, I also wanted to gain practical experience in a company. So I searched for startups: I just typed in "best startups 2019" on Google and there came ottonova.

I took very positive vibes from my interview. So then when I was offered the contract as a working student in the field, I was very excited to start at ottonova. And what I experienced in the office when I met all my colleagues was really cool. It's really a shame that I couldn't meet everyone in the office because of Corona, but after more than a year I still have a super positive feeling towards ottonova.

I honestly have never been interested in health insurance. As an IT guy, you're usually more interested in Google or Amazon. But the exciting thing about ottonova is that IT plays such a big role in the company. I think that's very positive, because everyone benefits from it.

And then you joined ottonova full time straight after your studies?

Yes, exactly. I was told right from the start that they would like me to join the team full-time. So I finished my studies in October and started working full-time at ottonova.

How exactly can we imagine your daily routine? You've already told us that you're in IT, but what exactly do you do there?

I have to break my work down into two steps. The first one: ottonova has different apps like the admin app. And I have to make sure that the new features are actually released. The last step, which is up to the developers, is to check that everything works as it should - and that's my job.

But then I also do automation testing, which is basically checking that everything that's already there continues to work the way it's supposed to. For example, if you develop a new function, it can happen that something no longer works with the old structures. This is then reflected in this automatic test that runs in the background.

Now we finally know what a Q&A Automation Engineer does. We would like to ask you one more question about yourself: What (digital) innovation would make your life easier?

Good question! I like to plan all my tasks very precisely and wouldn't have more Artificial Intelligence integrated into my everyday life, for example a more intensive use of Alexa and similar tools. And maybe evolve that a bit so it becomes even smarter. That would also be really cool for Q&A in the future.

Just last week I was thinking that there would be good approaches here for the ottonova office as well. In the app from my gym, you can see how many people are currently there. That would also be great for our ottonova office. Or maybe to see how many people are currently in the restroom at the same time.

Speaking of apps: What's your favorite app?

There is one that I really like: Trello.

You can create Kanban boards with Trello, right?

Yes, exactly. And other than that, Google Maps will always be my favorite app. I think Google Maps is really the most useful app in the world. You get real-time information about traffic jams, the zip codes of streets, and the satellite view is really great too. Google Maps takes you everywhere - I love it.

Maybe ten years ago you drove around with a big map and now it's so easy. You just type your destination into your phone and you know exactly where you need to go.

Could you imagine going back in time?

With Google Maps, you're never lost. As long as you have internet and battery on your phone, you can never get lost because Google Maps knows where you are.

That's a little bit creepy, but of course it's also cool.

That's what I was about to say, Google Maps knows so much. Where do you work? Where do you live? Are you visiting someone? If so, how often? But you can also view this information and use it for yourself.

So why exactly did you choose Germany? Certainly not because of the weather.

No, definitely not because of the weather. If I'm honest, the salary played a big role. I was curious to see how a country that lost two world wars was able to become one of the best in Europe again.

There are so many preconceptions about Germans and most of them are not true. And this is something you can only see with your own eyes when you live there. The good and the bad things. Italy, France, Portugal are countries that are very similar to my home country Spain. But Germany is not, it's different. In many aspects. That's what I find exciting.

What do you do when you're not working?

I like to be active, for example I like to go surfing at the Eisbach. I usually get up at 6 a.m., go surfing, go home to take a shower, and then start working. I also like to read a lot, stuff about computer science, but also science fiction. And I love music! Not just listening to it, but playing it myself. In Granada I had an indie rock band with some fellow students. There I played bass.

ottonova: We should start an ottonova band.

Álvaro: Yes, let's form the ottoband.

And finally: What was your best ottonova moment?

ottonova was the first full-time job for me, so I will never forget signing my contract. But there are also many other great ottonova moments, like when I celebrated my birthday at the office. In general, I think ottonova is a place where it doesn't matter if you are from marketing, HR, IT - you can always participate in any discussion and your opinion will be respected. I like that.
