Was ist deine Aufgabe bei ottonova?

Ich bin Software Engineer im Team LOKI bei ottonova. In diesem Team der IT-Abteilung sind wir für die erste Stufe der Customer Journey verantwortlich, d.h. alles was der User sehen kann, wenn er ottonova.de besucht. Konkret arbeite ich an einigen Frontend-Apps, wie dem Online-Beitragsrechner. Dort kann sich der User ein erstes Angebot berechnen, um sich einen ersten Eindruck zu verschaffen. Wir beschäftigen uns auch damit, eine bessere User Experience für unsere Kunden zu schaffen. Außerdem arbeite ich gemeinsam mit Kolleg*innen aus dem Sales und Marketing-Team daran, neue Features zu entwickeln und die internen Arbeitsprozesse zu verbessern.

What is your role at ottonova?

I am a software engineer in the LOKI team. We have different teams in the IT department and my team is the LOKI team. We are responsible for the first stage of the customer journey so basically it is what customers see when they get to ottonova.de. In detail I’m working on some frontend apps. For example, the digital assistant, the “Online-Beitragsrechner”. This app helps customers to calculate approximate costs and get an offer. And I am also helping our sales agents and marketing team to develop new features in our internal app, it’s called “Admin App” to make their life easier and working processes better. In general, I’m also working on finding places for improvements for our apps so our customers, our users, can have a better experience and can be more satisfied.

Wie sieht ein typischer Arbeitstag bei dir aus?

Als allererstes mache ich morgens Kaffee: ohne den kann ich schwer in den Arbeitstag starten. Danach haben wir unser Daily Meeting. Dort besprechen wir alles, was wir bereits erledigt haben und was für den Tag ansteht. Anschließend arbeite ich weiter an meinen Aufgaben aus dem aktuellen Sprint, den Tickets, oder widme mich dem Bug-Fixing. Ein Sprint ist ein Zeitraum, in dem bestimmte Aufgaben bearbeitet werden sollen.

Abgesehen von meinen regulären Aufgaben gibt es aber hin und wieder auch größere Challenges, bei denen ich mich intensiv in die technischen Details einarbeiten muss und teilweise auch gemeinsam mit meinen Kollegen brainstorme. Außerdem versetze ich mich gerne in die Lage des Kunden, um herauszufinden wo wir UX und UI noch verbessern können.

Und natürlich das Mittagessen, das ist der wichtigste Teil des Tages. Manchmal spielen wir gemeinsam virtuell Scribble. Das ist ein Spiel, bei dem man bestimmte Begriffe zeichnet und die anderen diese erraten müssen.

What does your typical working day look like?

First of all I’m making coffee because it’s hard to start your working day without coffee. Afterwards we have our daily meeting. It’s a meeting where we are discussing what we did previously and what the next plans are for today. After all these meetings I continue working on my tickets which are planned for the current sprint or maybe also fixing bugs.

Or sometimes there are some challenges in my work so it’s not only regular tickets, tasks and bugs but also some things you have to investigate, you have to dive deep into some technical things and sometimes it cannot be solved by your own because sometimes it’s something super complex and you’re brainstorming together. Besides that, I am also trying to put myself into the customer’s shoes and find places where I can improve UX or UI so users can be happier.

And of course, lunch! This is a very important part of my day. Sometimes I also play virtual scribble with my colleagues: it is a game where you have to draw a word and the others have to guess it.

Warum hast du dir ausgerechnet Deutschland und ottonova ausgesucht?

Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich den Entschluss gefasst, aus Russland auszuwandern und deshalb angefangen, Englisch zu lernen. Obwohl ich in der Schule Deutsch gelernt habe, ist es doch schwerer als Englisch. Deutschland hatte ich aber immer schon auf dem Schirm, weil es einerseits in der Mitte Europas liegt und andererseits auch landschaftlich sehr viel zu bieten hat: vor allem Bayern mit seinen Seen und Bergen. Ich hatte mir auch mal überlegt nach Kanada oder in die USA zu gehen, aber das ist so weit weg von meinen Eltern und von Deutschland aus kann ich sie viel häufiger besuchen.

Für ottonova habe ich mich entschieden, weil mir das Vorstellungsgespräch so gut gefallen hat. Alle waren so freundlich und offen. Daher war das die richtige Entscheidung für mich. Mir gefällt auch, dass ottonova ein modernes, digitales und innovatives Unternehmen ist: es ist immer inspirierend, in einem solchen Umfeld zu arbeiten.

How come you chose Germany and ottonova?

Some time ago I decided to move somewhere from Russia and so I started learning English because previously at school I didn’t learn English at all, I learned a bit German but I still wanted to improve my foreign language skills. I always wanted to move somewhere, and Germany was a really nice country because it is in the middle of Europe, it has beautiful nature, lakes, mountains, especially Bavaria. Of course, in my plans were also Canada and the US but it’s so far away from my parents.

And I chose ottonova because I really liked how the interview went. People were so friendly and welcoming. I’m really sure it was the right decision. I also like that ottonova is a modern, digital and innovative company, and it’s always inspiring to work in companies like this.

Wie lange bist du schon in Deutschland?

Ich bin schon seit anderthalb Jahren hier. Zwei Jahre bevor ich hergezogen bin, war ich auch schon einmal zu Besuch in München und habe mir Schloss Neuschwanstein und Linderhof angesehen. Damals hätte niemals gedacht, dass ich hier in Zukunft einmal leben werde. Und dann bin ich hierhergezogen und sehr glücklich darüber.

How long have you been in Germany?

I’ve already been here for one and a half years. I also was here two years before I moved here. I was in Munich and visited Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof and at that time I wouldn’t have thought that at some point in the future I would move here. And then I came here and I’m happy.

If you had one wish, what innovation would you launch?

I really like travelling and I wish I had some tool or some chip in my brain for real-time translation so I could understand everyone around me. There are so many countries and different cultures and so many interesting people but sometimes there is a language barrier and maybe you’re not so fluent in English. I’d really like to have this tool so I could speak my native language Russian, and everyone would understand me. I know that there are some tools for Skype or like Google translate but it’s not the same. Not like in Star Wars or some other movies where you can just speak and understand. There would be no need to learn a new language, but everyone could speak with each other.

Ich würde sagen, das ist aktuell „Notion“ ist. Das ist eine App, um Notizen zu machen, es gibt hier viele verschiedene Templates. Egal ob Einkaufsliste oder eine Art Ideensammlung, man kann es für viele verschiedene Zwecke benutzen und sogar individuell anpassen, zum Beispiel mit Hintergründen oder Icons. Man kann die Listen auch miteinander teilen: Gemeinsam mit meinem Freund habe ich eine Einkaufsliste, die wir zusammen pflegen und ergänzen können. Das ist super praktisch.

What’s your favorite app ...

apart from the ottonova app??

I would say “Notion”, maybe you know this app it is a powerful tool for making notes but it has also a lot of different templates. Whether it is a shopping list or reading list or some kind of roadmap. You can use it for many different ways, it is really convenient. You can also customize it, choose your background, some icons and you can even share it with someone. My boyfriend and I have a shopping list and we can fill this list together. It is really nice when you go shopping you can just open it and check everything you need to buy. This tool is free so everyone can use it.

Was machst du, wenn du nicht arbeitest?

Wie schon gesagt, reise ich sehr gerne. Leider kann man natürlich aktuell nur innerhalb Deutschlands reisen. Daher bin ich sehr froh, dass Deutschland so viel zu bieten hat, Berge und Seen, die man am Wochenende besuchen kann.

Außerdem bin ich ein großer Fan von Videospielen. Ich habe es geschafft, eine Playstation 5 zu ergattern, auf der ich nun fast jeden Abend spiele. Seit ich nach Deutschland gezogen bin, habe ich auch das Fotografieren, unter anderem mit Drohnen, für mich entdeckt. Vor allem Naturfotografie, das ist anders als in Moskau: Da war es eher Street Photography. Im Moment lerne ich, wie man eine first person view (FPV) Drohne fliegt. Damit kann ich alles aus der Perspektive der Drohne sehen.

Außerdem lerne ich Deutsch, obwohl es teilweise schon sehr schwer ist. Hat man allerdings Russisch als Muttersprache ist es ein wenig einfacher, da viele grammatikalische Strukturen in beiden Sprachen ähnlich sind.

What are you doing when you are not working?

Like I already said – I am a big fan of travelling. Unfortunately, right now you can’t go anywhere outside of Germany. But I’m really happy that I am here because here in Germany are so many lakes and mountains, so you can go there for the weekend.

I’m also really a fan of playing video games. I was able to get a Playstation 5 – which is really hard at the moment – and I’m so happy. So now I spend my evenings playing some games. After moving to Germany, I got really into photography and flying drone. There are not so many places where you can take pictures of the nature in Moscow, it’s mostly street photography or architecture, but here it is really wonderful. Now I’m learning how to fly a FPV (first person view) control drone so you can see everything that your drone is seeing.

Since last year, I’m also trying to learn German. I’m still struggling because it is just…it is not so easy. But I’ve noticed that for Russian speakers it’s much easier to learn German because the grammar is similar. But there are still so many tricky things.
