Emergency medical condition

In circumstances where medical attention is urgently required, there is not always time to consult your health insurance provider.

An emergency medical condition: What is that?

An emergency medical condition is any illness, condition or injury that is so severe, serious or painful that it is objectively reasonable to seek immediate medical attention to avert further harm. In particular, this means any illness, dysfunction or injury that is life-threatening.

Under German law, everyone living and working in Germany has the right to emergency medical attention – regardless of whether they have public or private health insurance.

If you require urgent medical assistance in Germany, call 112 immediately.

If you require urgent out-of-hours medical care in Germany but your condition is not serious or life-threatening, you should call 116 117 to reach the on-call medical service (Bereitschaftsdienst).
